WRIGHT BACKS ROONEY

The former Arsenal striker has said that he feels that the Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney will go down as one of the best in the game once he retires from football. The 27-year-old striker may still seem to have a lot of football ahead of him, but many forget the fact that he has been playing as a Premier league striker for more than 10 years now. He is also close to eclipsing the record for the most number of goals for the England national team. If he carries on at this pace, Ian Wright is confident that Wayne Rooney will become one of the best players in the world.

There have been a few situations during the last five years when Wayne Rooney has come close to leaving Manchester United, but Ian Wright reckons that he would have taken the wrong decision if he had left Old Trafford. Ian Wright has also said that people are yet to see the full potential of Rooney as a player. The former Everton youth team player is capable of playing in a variety of positions. He can play as the striker, behind the striker, in the midfield, and in the wings. Wright is also confident that the arrival of van Persie will only make him better.

“Wayne’s [Rooney] what, 26-years-old? I think he’s still got plenty of time to get to a tournament and show people that he has got what it takes to be one of the greats. I think he deserves it with the time he’s been in the game and the pressures he’s had to deal with in the public eye from a young age up to this point. The Xavi’s the Iniesta’s, the Pirlo’s – they’ve got the big medals as well as the Champions League one,” said Ian Wright.
