Ian Wright believes that Manchester United fans should show a lot of patience with Paul Pogba and he has likened the situation faced by the Frenchman to that of Mesut Ozil after the German’s move from Real Madrid.
Ozil came with a huge reputation, and a huge transfer fee as well, from Madrid.
After an initial flurry of performances, the German struggled throughout the campaign with many criticising the transfer fee and the quality of the player. Since then, he has come good and has been responsible for Arsenal lifting two FA Cup titles.
Pogba came to Manchester United for a world record transfer fee of £89 million, almost twice that of Mesut Ozil, and he has been criticised for his lack of any impact in the team in recent games. United manager Jose Mourinho has called for pundits and fans to show patience with the midfielder since he still has to settle at the club
Wright has also backed the judgement of the Portuguese manager, as he sees a quality player within Pogba who still needs more time to adjust to life in the Premier League after several years in the Italian Serie A. Pogba won numerous titles with Juventus before his move back to Old Trafford in the summer.
The midfielder has spent a couple of years in English football at United before his free transfer to Italy. “To me, there are similarities to Mesut Ozil when he first arrived at Arsenal and struggled.I believe it won’t be long before things click for Pogba and he becomes one of the best players in the league. It’s just a case of using him the right way. There needs to be a bit of patience with him but that’s in short supply when you cost £89m. Patience is needed across the board because United are in transition,” said Wright.
